Despite extensive research over the last 50 years, the functional purposes of sleep stages and dreams remain poorly understood. Typically, dreams denote an intense, bizarre sensory experience characterized by inconsistent dream plots and more importantly, a complete lack of insight into the fact that one is dreaming. In rare cases, however, the dreamer becomes aware of the dream state and may even gain some extent of control over the dream environment.
