Monk Prayosgshala - SPSP Bridge-Building Sessions

  • Monk Prayogshala 4114, 4th Floor, C Wing, Oberoi Garden Estates Near Chandivali Studios, Powai, Mumbai 400072 Maharashtra, India (map)

Monk Prayogshala is a recipient of the International Bridge-Building Award by the Society of Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP). We are hosting two sessions in 2021 to advance SPSP’s mission and vision among Indian psychologists and social scientists.

Session 1: January 13th, 2:30PM to 6PM IST

Open Science can nurture trust in Indian psychology

A. Workshop on Open Science

Psychology is a largely western enterprise. However, many psychologists across the world are attempting to correct this by studying their own cultures. On the other hand, a number of journals and other publications, especially based in India, are largely dubious. For example, Indian academics lead the world in publications in such journals. In this workshop, we highlight a methodological innovation that might foster trust in psychology to the larger public and to our scientist-peers here and abroad. The session will include troubleshooting queries related to the academic publishing process, as well as hands-on experience in identifying and avoiding predatory journals. We will also highlight processes to promote transparency and replicability as a practice among social psychologists in India and elsewhere. Such practices relate to ethics, and form a newer tool to communicate our findings.

B. Lecture on Culture and Psychology by Prof. Michael Muthukrishna

The workshop will be followed by a lecture by Prof. Michael Muthukrishna, Associate Professor of Economic Psychology at the London School of Economics. His research focuses on highlighting cross-cultural differences and measuring cultural distance. A Q&A session will follow the lecture. We encourage initial collaborations and discussion in this domain with reference to personality and social psychology, as well as partnerships among researchers and students.

From the participants of Session 1, ten students and six early career researchers will receive the SPSP 2021 membership and convention waivers and will be further invited to attend Session 2 on the basis of their SOP and CV.

Session 2: February 12th, 7:30PM to 9PM IST

Building Bridges over WEIRD Science

In this session, we will discuss phenomena specific to South East Asia (with a focus on India) that may not have theories in western/canonical social psychological and personality science. For instance, thus far, most theories of intergroup behaviors focus on race. It is largely unclear what happens when countries are largely monolithic with respect to race, but have other facets of intergroup violence? Do theories of intergroup behaviors translate to other groups, such as different languages, religions, or caste? Similarly, the session will also discuss diverse topics of interest in South-East Asia and the Global South. In this interactive session, participants will be invited to summarize some personality and social psychological research, such as consanguinity/kin-marriages, specific to the Global South.

Eligibility
