Gratitude is universally viewed as a positive emotion, and ingratitude as a negative emotion. This suggests that gratitude training is linked to increased well-being across cultures. Research on the impact of gratitude interventions in East Asian Cultures however, tell a different story. The article explores the differences in conceptualizations of gratitude between the east and west, and what this means for future directions in gratitude research and gratitude interventions.
